Ukrainian Modernism. Undervalued heritage.

Ukrainian Modernism. Undervalued heritage.

At such a time, quite a lot of difficult questions arise for Ukraine and Ukrainians. The war with russia has presented many challenges, they attempt to detach as far as possible from Russian culture and Soviet heritage, which embodies so much pain and loss. It poses a difficult task for society to separate what is part of communist propaganda and what is a real valuable cultural heritage of the Ukrainian people. In this project, I set myself the task of showing the extraordinary views of Ukrainian architects, engineers, and artists during the era of perestroika.
The book should consist of chapters devoted to 15 Ukrainian cities and architectural and artistic objects created in the 1970s to 1980s. Each of these objects is shown from sketches and plans created by artists to their realized forms that we can see on modern Ukrainian city streets.
In conclusion, I would like to note that Ukraine has inherited a priceless achievement of such an original phenomenon as modernism, which with sufficient care and attention can become the highlight of Ukrainian cities. The democratic way of understanding one's past consists in a careful attitude towards it. It is the best to answer historical questions with modern monuments of culture, architecture and history, in which the mistakes of the past will be taken into account and new achievements will be made both in the engineering and in the artistic and spiritual sense.

I was inspired to create this project by Dmytro Solovyov and his Instagram profile @ukrainianmodernism.
